Cully Cleanup on Earth Day, April 23rd

Cully Association of Neighbors invites you to join us for the 2016 Cully Earth Day Cleanup on Saturday, April 23rd! This annual event is an opportunity for residents to bring vehicles full of unwanted household items to one central location where volunteers will help unload and sort items into various recycling stations. While the main purpose of this event is to provide residents with a convenient and affordable option for recycling and reuse, funds raised from the cleanup also support CAN’s activities throughout the year, including this newsletter. Proceeds from the cleanup provide funding for the successful mini-grant program that has helped bring to fruition many neighbor-driven projects that directly benefit this community.
The cleanup accepts all sorts of bulky items, excluding hazardous waste, yard debris, construction materials, materials from commercial businesses and some things typically picked up with your normal trash and recycling service. Local nonprofits, like the Northeast Emergency Food Program, will be on site to collect donations of usable household goods, furniture, appliances, clothing and non-perishable food donations. Please see the accompanying flyer for more information about what we can and cannot accept, as well as suggested donation amounts.
One of the highlights of the cleanup is the neighborhood yard sale. Donated items in good condition are resold at very reasonable prices so that they can be reused instead of going straight to the landfill. Even if you don’t have items to donate, please feel free to drop by and shop; you never know what you’ll find! Anything remaining at the end of the event will be donated to the Salvation Army.
This year’s cleanup will be held from 9am-3pm on April 23rd in the parking lot of Trinity Lutheran Church and School at 5520 NE Killingsworth St. There will be no vehicle entrance from 55th and Killingsworth St. Please turn at 53rd and Killingsworth St. driving south one block and enter the parking lot from Emerson St. Shoppers coming to the neighborhood yard sale may park directly on Killingsworth St. – just look for the big tent. Students ages 14 and up can earn community service credit by participating in this event. All volunteers are permitted to dispose of one carload for free, will receive a complimentary meal and can select one item from the neighborhood yard sale.

Day of Market: Volunteer Jobs
Thursday Set up: 2:30-4:00 PM
Put up canopies, unfold tables and chairs, set up signs, banners, prepare info booth, and greet vendors. The physical requirements of this job include lifting, bending, reaching, and walking. Wear sturdy shoes, weather appropriate clothes, and bring a water bottle.
Thursday Information Booth: 4:00 to 7:00 PM
Sit at information booth and answer questions, handle money, direct customers, assist Community Table, administer SNAP program, assist musicians. The requirements of this job entail sitting, customer service, and money handling. Please wear weather appropriate clothes, bring a water bottle, and a smile.
Thursday Break down: 7:00 to 8:30 PM
Take down canopies, tables, chairs, banners, signs, remove garbage, store market materials, and collect unsold produce. The physical requirements of this job are lifting, bending, reaching, and walking. Please wear sturdy shoes, weather appropriate clothes, and bring a water bottle.

Cully Neighborhood Litter Patrol
Cully Neighborhood Albertsons is committed to improving the living conditions in the Cully Neighborhood by partnering with the community, Cully Association of Neighbors and SOLV by hosting a monthly litter patrol.
Who
Volunteers interested in making our neighborhood more livable. In July, we collected half a dumpster collecting from Rigler to Harvey Scott Elementary along both sides of Prescott.
What
Monthly Neighborhood Litter Patrols- August Litter Patrol will canvass Cully Blvd from Fremont to Killingsworth.

What to bring

Join the Cully Neighborhood Tree Planting!
March 30, 2013. You will get a city-approved tree for your planting strip for as little as $35 per tree if registered by January 5th. All participants are asked to help plant trees on planting day, but can also volunteer in some other capacity instead. Trees will be between 1.25″ and 2″ in diameter (6-14 feet tall). On planting day, trained volunteers will assist with hole digging and tree planting. Additionally, you will be supplied with stakes, ties and labels, as well as follow-up monitoring of your tree.
