How to Apply for SNAP (food stamps)

Begin with an assessment to see if you qualify, then complete an application. There are options to do so via online, working with your local human services department or downloading the application and filling it out and sending it in. There are several good websites that can walk you through the process and/or link you to good resources.

Most referral websites seem to work the same, asking for your zip code to determine your nearest human services department. Once you connect with your local human services department, you will be working with them for the duration while you are receiving SNAP benefits. Most likely, you will be renewing your application yearly.
In addition, you can go into your local socially security office (if it is open) and they will refer you to your local human services department.
When I would work with my clients, I would remind them to not be overwhelmed or intimidated by the intake or application process. Just take it one question at a time and move on to the next one. There is a beginning, the middle and the end. Eventually you will reach the end. Breath and work your way through it. Also, once your eligibility packet had been sent in, often your case worker will contact you for additional information. It can almost always be expected. Don’t freak; just figure out what they are asking and respond. Communication is always the key. Persistence and patience with the phone system is a Zen-like skill you need to develop. Work your way through, and when you reach a person, talk to them. Be human; make nice. When you make the human connection, they begin working with you.

La mayoría de las páginas web referidas parecen funcionar de la misma manera, preguntándote por tu código postal para determinar el departamento de servicios humanos que te queda más cerca. Sé humano, sé simpático. Cuando logras una conexión humana, ellos empiezan a trabajar contigo.
